Nominating Committee

The mission of the nomination committee is to select nominees for trustees and officers of the UUSGU Board of Trustees. The nomination committee chair and members seek input from the minister(s) and board president as part of the selection process. The committee will interview prospective candidates and select the slate of nominees based on their experience and complementarity with the existing board. The committee chair will present the list of nominees at the annual meeting in January for a final vote by the membership.

Board Nomination Process

The purpose of a Board Nomination process is to assure a fair selection of people for new board members, officers, and COM members. The following will steps, once approved by the board, will be included in proposed revision to the by-laws.

At any time during the year, preferably before the Fall, the President shall select 2 to 3 interested members of the congregation to act as a Nominating Committee. Typically the nominating committee consists of at least one former Board Member or President but shall not consist of existing and current Board Members or COM members.

Assuming the annual meeting is in January, the process will begin in the Fall. The board will first identify open slots or finishing terms for the New Year, and then document the kind of skills sets that they are looking for in new potential candidates. The board and minister can identify and propose a number of potential candidates. The open slots, skill set, job descriptions, and list of proposed candidates are forwarded to the nomination committee. (For COM selection, the board meets to propose a list of several top candidates and the minister is later allowed one veto).

The nomination committee shall review the list and ask potential candidates of their interest and select nominees based on match with the skill sets and willingness of the candidate to take on board duties as outlined in the board mission statement. Some consideration should be given to achieve balance on the board in terms of gender, age, tenure with the church, and skill set.

Prior to the annual meeting (typically in December), the nominating committee or designated chair will seek input from the Minister on selected candidates. This will allow for discussion of matches which may or may not sway the nomination committee's selection. I may also allow existing board members the opportunity plan their tenure accordingly. The nominations information is then posted in Fellowship Hall 10 days prior to the annual meeting.

During the annual meeting the nominating committee announces the changes in board seats, the existing term structure. The nominees are voted on by the congregation.
